What is Soft Tissue Therapy (STT)?

It seemed to make sense to me to use this unusual free time, all be it, it seems to be becoming slighlty more familiar, to tackle the question "What is soft tissue therapy?" with my first CS Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy blog. I hope you enjoy!

According to the Association of Soft Tissue Therapists (SMA), soft tissue therapy (STT) is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is available not just to sports people but to anybody wishing to guard against or recover from a soft tissue injury.

A few benefits that you could expect from regular STT are...

* Mitigating risk of injury

* Pain reduction

* Sleep improvement

* Increses body awareness

*Trigger point release

* Improves range of motion in joints (I personally think this is very important)

* Aids injury rehabilitaion

* Enhances athletic performance

* Positive contribution to mental health

So, if the above sounds like something you need, you may be thinking, when should I seek a treatment? STT can have a positive impact on your body's function whether at work, home or during sports. There are many many reasons why you may look to recieve a treatment such as...

* Occupational hazzards - Imbalances, stress, pain of stiffness caused buy long hours at a desk or repetative manual work

* As part of a rehabilitaion programme to return to an active daily lifestyle or sport/exercise.

* Preperation for a sporting event

* Post-operative work to improve mobility and function

* General self care

Once you have seen your therapist for your first assessment, they will be able to advise you on a treatment plan. The frequency of treatments depends on the individual but it can releate to a number of different factors, including, how long you may havebeen suffering with your issue, how you and your body responds and the condition that may be driving the issue. Regular treatments may vary from anything between once or twice a week to monthly, as a maintenance programme or a good/healthy protocol.
